Abstract: A Rational Approach to Developing Oral Extended Release Products
The pharmaceutical industry must generate novel, effective and safe therapeutics that address unmet clinical need and at a reasonable price. Developing a new oral extended release (ER) product presents formidable scientific, medical and regulatory challenges. This presentation will review the challenges faced by the development scientists as a background to proposing a rational approach to drive future ER product development. This new “truth-seeking” approach surpasses the conventional paradigm by incorporating modeling/simulation, understanding of the disease state, clinical endpoint and drug toxicity profile. Synergistic use of these elements along with biopharmaceutical properties of the drug and GI transit behavior of different oral delivery technologies will help in developing commercially viable oral ER therapeutics.
