| Abstract: |
The presentation will focus on the basic understanding of food effects on drug bioavailability and its
implications on safety and/or efficacy. In addition, current knowledge with regard prediction and characterization
of food effects will be shared. Commercially successful state-of-the-art drug delivery systems to overcome food
effects will also be highlighted. Based on real life experiences, FDA issued a guidance "Food-effect bioavailability
and fed bioequivalence studies" in 2002. Since then food effect is taken into consideration during compound
selection in early development. However, this issue offers drug delivery scientists an opportunity for lifecycle
management strategies to address food effects with special delivery systems for marketed drugs. |

Dr. Saran Kumar is a Principal Fellow in the Pharmaceutical and Analytical Development Department
at Novartis Pharmaceutical Corporation, East Hanover, NJ. He is also a member of the Novel Delivery
Therapeutics & Global Life-Cycle Management teams and is actively pursuing drug delivery opportunities
for Novartis drug candidates. He has over two decades of extensive experience in drug delivery system
design and development both at Roche and now at Novartis. He has been actively involved in the areas
of drug delivery system development for oral, nasal, transdermal & parenteral routes for small and large
(protein, peptide, mAb‘s) molecules. He has also published in these drug delivery areas. His efforts
have led to the development of marketed products in parenteral e.g. Pegasys® & oral e.g. CoPegus®. |
