An integrated Advanced Process Control (APC) system has been implemented for multi-step process optimization at a commercial manufacturing site. The APC system optimizes across wet granulation and fluidized bed drying unit operations to reduce variability, improve process robustness, reduce cycle time and increase throughput. Multiple models developed in this integrated APC system play critical roles in PAT-based calibration, soft sensor and model predictive control. Model development, validation and maintenance will be discussed.

About the speaker
Dr. Jun Huang has been working in the pharmaceutical industry, currently Pfizer and previously GSK in the US, for more than ten years, with various roles from R&D to manufacturing technology management and business development. Dr. Huang has managed a number of innovation projects involving cross-functional global teams to develop next-generation manufacturing technologies and optimize manufacturing performance, leading to significant cost saving, revenue generation, quality and supply assurance. He has been a major contributor to a number of key manufacturing and business initiatives, most notably, Intelligence-based Manufacturing, Digital Transformation, Smart Manufacturing, IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) and Advanced Analytics.
Dr. Huang holds a PhD in chemometrics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Norway, an MBA in Finance and Supply Chain Management from Rutgers University in the USA, and an MSc in Engineering from Zhejiang University and a BSc from Huazhong University of Sci and Tech, China.
In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf and soccer, painting and wine tasting.
