Scalable Nano-Repurposing Strategies for Enhanced Efficacy against New Indications

Scalable Nano-Repurposing Strategies for Enhanced Efficacy against New Indications

Vivek Gupta, PhD (St John's University)

Repurposing i.e. finding new indications for old FDA-approved drugs has been gaining importance for a long time as an alternative drug discovery approach. With advent of new diseases such as current covid-19 pandemic, drug repurposing has been more important than ever, for finding new cures for many deadly diseases. While promising, many challenges exist in clinical translation of repurposed therapies for new indications, including development of a favorable PK/PD and toxicity profile, including intended target site accumulation. Nanomedicine may offer feasible solutions to enhance potential of repurposed therapies. However, issues associated with complex formulation design, scalability, and manufacturing pose serious challenges. In this presentation, we will discuss some of the pharmaceutically scalable nanomedicine fabrication solutions, which could be adapted at currently available equipment, and can be seamlessly translated from academic innovation lab to commercial manufacturing.

About the speaker

Dr. Vivek Gupta is an assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences at St. John’s University in New York. Dr. Gupta’s research interests are focused on finding new treatments for rare respiratory disorders including pulmonary arterial hypertension and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
His research lab utilizes a rather unconventional approach of drug repurposing i.e. finding new therapeutic uses for old FDA approved small drug molecules. In addition, his lab also has significant interests in investigating the effect of particulate drug carriers’ physicochemical properties on their deposition in respiratory tract and lungs.
